Founded in 1996 and operated by Norway-based NHST Media Group, Upstream is one of the world’s most influential media outlets in the oil and gas industry, offering the latest industry updates from a professional perspective.

Main Idea

Chinese contractor expands offshore ambitions, aiming for full-system integration

By drawing on its three decades of manufacturing experience, Himile Heavy Industries seeks to become “one-stop solutions provider” in stead of “equipment manufacturer” in the offshore oil and gas industry. Himile is preparing to step onto a bigger global stage with its new Qidong yard in China's Jiangsu province.

Covering an area of 1.3 million square meters (equal to 1,950 mu), the Qidong Industrial Park can handle individual modules weighing up to 15,000 tons, with an annual throughput of approximately 200,000 tons. It is capable of providing complete topside module integration for facilities such as FPSOs (Floating Production, Storage and Offloading vessels).

What this industrial park brings is not just increased production capacity, but a "strategic gateway" to the global market. There has direct access to global shipping routes and connects Himile’s existing business in Gaomi and Rushan (including pressure vessels, skids, modules, etc.) into an integrated supply chain.

"With the linkage of our three industrial parks, we can provide one-stop solutions for customers. Our investment philosophy is to establish long-term strategic cooperation with partners, achieve mutual benefit and win-win results, and address pain points of the industry and our customers."Zongkui Han stated in an interview with Upstream.

What is its core competitiveness?

On one hand, Himile’s three decades of precision manufacturing expertise serves as its "solid backbone." Zongkui Han explained, "Himile can develop its own machine tools, flexibly create specialized equipment, and strictly control quality. Most shipyards lack this capability, which is one of the reasons we can compete in the high-standard deepwater sector."

On the other hand, the "equity ownership mechanism for outstanding key employees" constitutes its "soft power." Han noted, "This is a company where employees truly feel a sense of belonging. Combined with our experience in cost reduction and efficiency improvement, this gives us real competitiveness."

For Zongkui Han, the mission now is clear: to integrate Himile’s tradition of precision manufacturing with the growing demand in offshore engineering projects for reliable, integrated suppliers.

"The company already has a solid foundation, a strong corporate culture, and excellent employees," he said. "My job is to introduce the discipline of the offshore engineering industry, restructure our business lines, and prepare for long-term development. Offshore engineering business is not a sprint—it’s a marathon, and the Qidong Industrial Park has just put us at the starting line."

Himile’s Oil & Gas Business

In 2008, Himile entered the engineering equipment manufacturing industry , forming a collaborative development pattern between its factories in Gaomi and Rushan (Shandong Province), integrating static equipment, skids, and modules into an integrated system. In 2024, Qidong Industrial Park officially signed the agreement and launched its planning. Himile is committed to building a manufacturing base for engineering module projects and an outbound port for large-scale equipment. Himile is advancing the transformation and upgrading toward the manufacturing of larger, heavier, and more complex equipment!
